Course Outline

Description:

International Relations is the study of how countries relate to each other, depend on each other for cooperation, share mutual benefits and deal with global challenges such as climate change, trans-national crimes, terrorism, etc.

This course introduces students to key concepts and theories of International Relations. Students are expected to develop an understanding of the International System – the structure and processes in which states act as separate entities yet they agree or disagree to cooperate with each other in various areas. Apart from states, they will explore vital concepts, models and practices of international organizations and the laws that govern states’ behaviors.

Students will analyze security issues that threaten states as well as the international community and how they deal with them.  Moreover, they will analyze how economic activities determine states’ behaviors.

Activities and assignments will further enhance and broaden students’ understanding of the key concepts and theories.

Requirements:

This course can be taken by anyone with an enthusiasm and passion for International Relations. You should have completed Grade 12 with better grades or equivalent.

Working class people can apply. However, progression onto the next topic will depend on the successful completion of the previous topic/lecture.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the program, students will be able to;

  • Develop an understanding of the key concepts and theories of International Relations;
  • Relate the concepts, processes, models and practices to describe the International System and to describe individual states’ behavior;
  • Grasp an understanding on how they could potentially apply the knowledge and skills at their workplace in terms of interpreting Current Affairs, World News, analyzing Foreign Policy and applying Diplomatic Skills, where necessary;
  • Analyze some of the model organizations or world events and draw vital conclusions, recommendations and lessons from them;
  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge in completing assignments and reports.

Key Attributes / Expected Outcomes:

After completing this course program, students can proceed to find jobs in the following;

  • the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT/DFAT);
  • the International Relations Department of the Prime Minister (or President);
  • Diplomatic Missions overseas;
  • Diplomatic Missions located in your country such as Embassies, High Commissions & Consuls;
  • Foreign Policy Analyst with your government;
  • Strategic Military Intelligence and advisory task;
  • International Organizations such as United Nations agencies, NGOs and other Inter-Governmental Organizations;
  • Foreign Policy Correspondent or Political Analyst (journalist); and
  • many more.

Students can move onto the Diploma in Degree programs.

Learning / Teaching Strategies

  • Learning and teaching strategies involve the Flexible Learning (online) model where students will have to maintain correspondences through, email and the use of Internet using our website.
  • Our global portal (this website) has online registration, course outlines, course materials, etc. Students can just apply and login.
  • Students can study from anywhere in the world using any device to access their online account (phones, tablets, laptops, media-pads, etc).
  • Assignments can be submitted by email and corrections/comments/feedback will also be sent via email. Consultation and queries can be addressed anytime (24/7). Make use of our Facebook Page too.
  • The course coordinators/lecturers/tutors can be contacted any time for consultation, queries, explanations, discussions, etc.
  • Successful completion of the course depends on the achievements of all the learning objectives and areas of competency as assessed.

 Assessment:

Student will complete activities and assignments on the Activity Booklet and submit them as soon as they complete them. Feedback, corrections and comments will be sent back to students for reflection and further self-evaluation.

Those activities include;

  1. analyzing of the key concepts, theories, processes and practices in International Relations;
  2. Demonstrating the application of concepts/theories especially analyzing individual states’ Foreign Policy decisions and their actions in the international arena.
  3. Completing all activities on lectures and the Major Assignment.

Evaluation:

There will be an evaluation of the course at the end of the program where individual students will give feedback in terms of rating, describing and provide personal perception of the course itself, the modes of delivery, teaching methods, content cover, facilities, etc.

At the end of the course, students will receive their Certificate of Accomplishment with a Reference.

Key references are mentioned on the lecture notes as footnotes at the bottom of the materials. Other materials are mentioned in the course booklet.

Extra readings will be issued from time to time in order to broaden students’ understanding.
